Torquay Pageant Part One

A passion for the past took the counties over
With historical pageants from Sherborne to Dover
In a seaside town in nineteen twenty four
There was a pageant, it had not had one before
Off to Rock End gardens
In the June sunshine
To enjoy the pageant
To have a real good time
Now Mister Arthur Aplin a hero from the war
He was the pageant master his novels I adore
A playwright and an actor, he knew a thing or two
He said to the town, now it's up to you
Off to Rock End gardens
In the June sunshine
To enjoy the pageant
To have a real good time
Vice Admiral McCully happened to be in Torbay
He opened the pageant during his short stay
Off to Rock End gardens
In the June sunshine
To enjoy the pageant
To have a real good time
Now the pageant is forgotten and few will ever know
Of the many thousands who enjoyed the show
Yes the pageant is forgotten and few will ever know
Of the many thousands who enjoyed the show

Hail! Hail! the first of May,
winter is now behind us.
Hail! Hail! this glorious day,
Spring is here, yes spring is here.
Here comes Jack, Jack in Green,
Emerging from his green wood slumber.
Ready to dance with the new May Queen
Chase away all thoughts of Winter.
Raise the Maypole, dance and sing
Celebrate this very special morn.
Hope that the coming days will bring
Healthy young flocks and fields of corn.

Less Fortunate Than Fair

Less fortunate than fair she's said to be
But she's given love so easily
Yes she's given love so easily
Wed for the first time she was so young
Ralph was her husband, together they clung
But the Tudor usurper wished her otherwise wed
So Ralph was cast out, for another instead.
Less fortunate than fair she's said to be
But she's given love so easily
Yes she's given love so easily

1st chorus
It's the regatta in Torquay
The thought of it brings such glee
With yacht racing in the bay
Money for the fair saved since May
1st verse
On the switchback you'll lose your bearings
Come and buy some dainty fairings
Try your luck on the coconut shy
Bid for nougat please come and try
2nd chorus
It's the regatta in Torquay
The thought of it brings such glee
The horses on the roundabout
The strangest shows without a doubt
2nd verse
Penny monkeys in every hue
Pin your coat with one or two
Can you pitch a ping pong ball
A goldfish prize for one and all
Middle bit
Out in the bay the yachts race by
From Haldon pier you can watch them fly
Brittania is sighted up goes the cry
Beneath the blue August sky
Last chorus
It's the regatta in Torquay
The thought of it brings such glee
With yacht racing in the bay
Money for the fair saved since May

EDWARD THE FOURTH LAY DYING
AT HIS DEATH BED THEY GATHERED ROUND
AND HE NAMED THE LORD PROTECTOR
WHO HE HOPED WOULD SEE HIS SON CROWNED

To the tournaments he travelled
To test his mettle for battle
Into the melee to be thrust,
Fighting bravely until dusk,

Bushmen and sawmill hands wanted.
Come and help the motherland defeat the common foe.
Bushmen and sawmill hands wanted.
So the posters told us, so off we must go.

Exchanging gifts at Christmas
With Jerry in no man's land
For once the guns were silent
Did the generals understand
Ignoring the orders to shoot to kill
The sounds of shells faded with gestures of goodwill
And I saw a Tommy shake Jerry's hand.
They sang festive carols
And lit small Christmas trees
Then played a game of football
In the mud and the winter's breeze
You'll be home for Christmas
That's what they had been told
But the horror of the trenches
And the stalemate would unfold

Such a warm September evening
Thoughts of harvest had me thinking
From my office my soul destroyed
To the museum which I so enjoyed
An angel arrived at the close of the day
A metal detectorist called to say
Something he had discovered
A piece of history maybe recovered
Dave Bethell held it in his hand
When I saw it I could understand
His excitement for a special find
The discovery of a lifetime in his mind
A gold half angel so very rare
See the boar's head just there
The King's arms on the reverse
But would this coin be a gold curse

With many ships and many men
William sailed for Torbay
This made James think again
When his fleet was evaded
And his realm was invaded
For to take the crown
Yes the English crown
William had been persuaded
James took a second wife
Mary of Modena
To help his Catholic life
Sound judgement was evaded
And his realm was invaded
For to take the crown
Yes the English crown
William had been persuaded
In fog and mist along the English coast
William came to Brixham
James feared him the most
And bloodshed was evaded
When England was invaded
For to take the crown
Yes the English crown
William had been persuaded
A Foolish King James the Second
To be Catholic he had reckoned
Would convert England back to Rome
But due to this he lost his throne
Go to Brixham and you will see
A statue of white marble
William of Orange on the quay
The smells can't be evaded
And the tourists have invaded
But don't frown
At the seagull for his crown
Where history was created
Oh no don't frown
At the seagull for his crown
Where history was created

Over looking Torbay on a perfect June day
Our Pageant begins at a time
When mammoths still roam
And Torquay is home
To cavemen depicted in mime
Then next are displayed fair maidens afraid
For the druids to sacrifice
But what of the omens
Then enter the Romans
The maidens saved in a trice
In episode three an Abbot we see
Torre Abbey is endowed
Children are playing
The monks they are praying
Of the abbey they are so proud
A noble man's wedding and then we are heading
To a challenge on fine steeds
Then Drake on the hoe
With a fair wind to blow
We hear of his brave deeds
A Princess arrives to our surprise
And also Devon's high born
A triumphal parade
Of the actors is made
In all the costumes worn
